2. YOUR OBLIGATIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

You acknowledge, understand and agree to the following Registry obligations and responsibilities are in addition to the Obligations and Responsibilities in HEXONET’s Registrant Agreement:

2.1 When registering a .FI domain the you agree that you have read and understood and consent to the Registry Policies, especially the policy regarding lawful domain names https://www.viestintavirasto.fi/en/fidomain/howtogetanfi-domainname/lawfuldomainnames.html

2.2 Protected domain names.

2.2.1. You acknowledge and agree that you are required to check that the .FI domain name you are about to register is not a protected name or trademark owned by another party in Finland or the EU.

2.2.2. Under the Information Society Code, protected names and trademarks include:

  1. names or trademarks that have been entered into the trade register or into the registers of trademarks, associations, foundations, or political parties in Finland
  2. names of public bodies, unincorporated state enterprises, independent public corporations, public associations, or diplomatic missions of a foreign State or their bodies
  3. established names, secondary marks or trademarks referred to in the Business Names Act or Trademarks Act EU trademarks entered into the EUIPO trademark register.

2.2.3 Please see public registers of the Finnish Patent and Registration Office (business information system, register of associations, register of trademarks) and the EU trademark register of the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) for further information.

2.2.4. At the time of registration, a domain name must not be:

  1. based on a protected name or trademark owned by another party, unless the domain name holder can present a good, acceptable reason for registering the domain name
  2. similar to a protected name or trademark owned by another party, if the clear intent of registering the domain name is to benefit from it or to cause damage.

2.2.5. You acknowledge and agree that if a holder of a protected name or trademark so requests, FICORA can later assess whether a domain name similar to the protected name or trademark was registered with the intent of obtaining benefit or harming another.

2.2.6. You agree that FICORA resolves claims to remove domain names at the request of a holder of a protected name or trademark. There is no time limit for filing such claims which means that claims may be considered even ten years after the registration of the domain name. Therefore, it is possible that you may later lose its .FI domain name if the domain name has been identical to a protected name or trademark owned by another party at the time of the registration.

2.3. Permitted Characters for domain names Characters allowed in a domain name are the letters from A to Z and the numbers from 0 to 9. In addition, permitted characters include native language characters å, ä and ö, as well as characters in the Sami languages spoken in Finland and the hyphen-minus.

When applying for a domain name or planning to do so, you must be aware of the technical restrictions related to domain names containing native language characters.

In particular, you may have the need to apply for a domain name containing native language characters and an equivalent domain name without native language characters, for example ääkkönen.fi and aakkonen.fi.

Punycode, also called ACE (ASCII Compatible Encoding), enables the use of characters outside the Latin alphabet. The name server system understands a domain name consisting of native language characters, if it is technically defined as an ACE string.

For instance, the ACE form of ääkkönen.fi is xn--kknen-fraa=0m.fi.
